The Urban Majlis : Doha installation
Inspired by the Qatari tradition of hospitality, "The Urban Majlis" is a dynamic public art installation in Souq Waqif. It reimagines the welcoming spirit of the majlis, a space for gathering and connection. This installation features multi-level objects, offering spaces for sitting, climbing, lounging, and playing, fostering interaction among all ages. Drawing on the rich decorative traditions of the Arab world, the installation integrates a bright color with various shades abstractly treated to create a destination and an invitation for appropriation. The installation's size and color complement the streetscape, making it a prominent landmark. By blending traditional elements with contemporary architectural techniques, this installation also serves as a dynamic public space that reflects the evolving urban landscape of Doha.
Situated amidst the souq's liveliness, The Urban Majlis transforms the pedestrian streets from mere passages into vibrant spaces, encouraging social and serendipitous encounters. The design caters to all ages, inviting diversity with flexible opportunities for sitting, climbing, lounging, meeting, waiting, and playing. Additionally, the design seamlessly blends Souq Waqif's heritage with contemporary aesthetics, becoming a central gathering spot and a significant landmark. It encourages users to interact with and appropriate the space, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
